Cut problem frequencies rather than boosting desired ones as your default approach — removing muddy low-mids or harsh highs usually creates a cleaner result than boosting other frequencies to compensate.
Compression Basics: Threshold, Ratio & Attack
A compressor reduces volume once a signal crosses a threshold, by an amount set by ratio, after a delay set by attack time — used to control dynamic range and glue a mix together, not just to make things louder.
Mix Bus & Reverb/Delay
Reverb & Delay Sends
Route multiple tracks to a shared reverb or delay send rather than adding individual reverb plugins to every channel — this creates a more cohesive sense of shared space and is significantly more CPU-efficient.
The Mix Bus & Glue Compression
Apply light compression across the entire mix bus (the sum of all tracks) to subtly 'glue' elements together into a cohesive whole — a different and complementary technique to compressing individual tracks.
The Balanced Mix
Take your Phase 2 arrangement and create a full mix: gain-staged tracks with no clipping, a rough balance pass by ear, subtractive EQ on at least 3 elements, compression on at least 2 elements, a shared reverb send, and light glue compression on the mix bus.
Success criteria: No individual track or the master output clips (shows red) at any point in the mix. Each major element (drums, bass, lead, pads) is clearly audible without fighting for space. The mix has a cohesive sense of space from shared reverb rather than each element sounding disconnected.
