Synthesis Basics

Filters & the ADSR Envelope
A filter removes frequencies to shape brightness; the ADSR envelope (Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release) shapes how a sound's volume changes over time — together they transform a raw waveform into an expressive, usable sound.
Sampling
Chopping & Rearranging Samples
Slice a longer audio sample into smaller pieces and rearrange, pitch-shift, or loop them to create something new — a foundational hip-hop and electronic production technique going back to the earliest sampler era.
Layering Samples for Texture
Combine multiple samples (a vinyl crackle under a clean drum loop, a field recording under a synth pad) to add sonic texture and depth that a single clean sample alone can't achieve.
The Full Arrangement
Arrange a complete 2-minute track with distinct intro, verse, chorus, and outro sections, incorporating at least one custom synthesizer sound you built from an initialized patch and at least one chopped or layered sample.
Success criteria: The arrangement has at least 4 distinguishable sections with different instrumentation or energy levels. The custom synth sound is audibly present and was not started from a preset. At least one sample has been chopped, pitched, or layered rather than used unmodified.
