Phase 4 · Months 6–8

Mastering & Release

Phase Objective: Master a finished track to competitive loudness and prepare it for release on streaming platforms.
Advanced 2 Modules · 1 Milestone
MODULE 10

Mastering Basics

10.1

Loudness & the Limiter

A limiter is an extreme compressor that prevents any signal from exceeding a set ceiling, allowing a track's overall loudness to be raised significantly without clipping — the primary tool for competitive streaming loudness.

10.2

LUFS & Streaming Platform Targets

Streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple Music) normalize loudness to roughly -14 LUFS integrated — mastering significantly louder than this provides no audible benefit since the platform turns it back down, and can even reduce quality through excessive limiting.

Pro Tip Master to sound good at -14 LUFS rather than chasing maximum loudness — a track that's over-limited to compete in loudness often sounds worse, not better, once every platform normalizes it anyway.

MODULE 11

Release Preparation

11.1

File Formats & Metadata

Export a final WAV master at the correct sample rate and bit depth, and correctly fill in metadata (track title, artist, genre, artwork) required by distribution platforms before a track can be properly released.

11.2

Distribution Basics

Services like DistroKid, TuneCore, or CD Baby deliver a finished, mastered track to Spotify, Apple Music, and other platforms for a fee or subscription — understand the basic process even if you don't release commercially yet.

🎓 Capstone Final Project

The Mastered, Release-Ready Track

Master your Phase 3 mixed track to approximately -14 LUFS integrated loudness using a limiter, export a final WAV file at correct specifications, and complete all metadata fields required for a hypothetical distribution submission.

Success criteria: The mastered track measures within 1-2 LUFS of the -14 target when checked with a loudness meter. The limiter is not so aggressive that it introduces audible pumping or distortion. The exported file uses correct sample rate and bit depth, and all metadata fields (title, artist, genre) are complete.

Phase 4 Practice Exercises

12 exercises to build skill through direct application.

Exercise 01 of 12 · Advanced

Limiter Threshold Practice

Apply a limiter to a mixed track, adjusting the ceiling and input gain to find the point just before audible distortion begins.

  • Limiter calibration
  • Loudness maximization
  • Distortion threshold awareness

LUFS Measurement Drill

Use a loudness meter to measure 3 of your own tracks and 2 professional reference tracks, comparing all 5 LUFS readings.

  • LUFS measurement skill
  • Loudness benchmarking
  • Meter-based mastering
Exercise 03 of 12 · Advanced

Over-Limiting Comparison

Master the same track at -14 LUFS and again at -6 LUFS (over-limited), comparing audible pumping and distortion artifacts.

  • Over-limiting awareness
  • Quality vs loudness tradeoff
  • Critical mastering judgment

Reference Track A/B Mastering

Master your track while switching back and forth to a professional reference track at matched loudness, comparing tonal balance.

  • Reference-based mastering
  • Loudness-matched comparison
  • Tonal balance assessment
