Sighting
In open water there are no lane lines — 'sighting' means briefly lifting your eyes forward every few strokes while swimming freestyle to check your direction without losing your rhythm.
Open Water Safety Practices
Always swim open water with a buddy or in a supervised area, use a brightly colored swim buoy for visibility to boats and other water users, and know the exit points before entering.
Performance Under Fatigue
Maintaining Technique When Tired
Consciously check your stroke count per length as fatigue sets in — most swimmers' technique degrades unconsciously under fatigue, and stroke-count awareness catches this before it becomes exhausting inefficiency.
Cold Water Acclimatization
If progressing toward open water, gradually acclimatize to cooler water temperatures through short, supervised sessions — cold shock response is a real safety risk that acclimatization meaningfully reduces.
The 400-Meter Endurance Swim
Swim 400 meters continuously in a pool using at least 3 strokes, incorporating sighting practice during freestyle segments, and complete the distance while maintaining recognizable technique in the final 100m.
Success criteria: The full 400m is completed without stopping. Sighting is demonstrated at least 3 times during a freestyle segment. Technique in the final 100m remains clearly recognizable, not collapsed from fatigue.
