Rhythm & Flow
Skating to Music
Match your stride rhythm to a steady musical beat, feeling how tempo influences push timing and glide length — the foundation of rhythm and jam skating styles.
Weight Shifts & Style
Add deliberate hip and shoulder movement synchronized with your stride to create visual flow and style, rather than pure mechanical efficiency.
Performance Routine
Sequencing Skills Into a Routine
Combine forward striding, a turn, a crossover, and a stop into a deliberately choreographed sequence performed to a chosen piece of music.
Performing With Confidence
Practice your routine enough times that execution becomes automatic, freeing mental attention for stage presence and enjoying the performance rather than just surviving it.
The Choreographed Routine Performance
Perform a 60–90 second choreographed skating routine to music, incorporating forward striding, at least one turn, one crossover sequence, and a controlled stop, in front of an audience or recorded on video.
Success criteria: The routine is performed start to finish without falling. Movement is loosely synchronized to the music's rhythm. All required elements (turn, crossover, stop) are visibly included.
Phase 4 Practice Exercises
12 exercises to build skill through direct application.
Beat-Matching Stride Drill
Skate in a straight line matching your stride push to a metronome or song beat, adjusting stride length to match tempo.
- Rhythmic synchronization
- Tempo matching
- Musical stride control
Hip Movement Isolation
Practice adding hip sway to your stride while stationary-gliding, then apply it while moving slowly.
- Style development
- Hip movement control
- Expressive technique
Routine Element Selection
Choose which specific turn, crossover, and stop you'll include in your routine, and practice each in isolation once more.
- Routine planning
- Element selection
- Personal style choice
Music Selection & Timing
Choose a 60–90 second song section and count out how many strides fit comfortably within it.
- Music-movement mapping
- Routine timing
- Practical choreography
Routine Sequence Walkthrough
Walk through your routine sequence off-skates first, visualizing each transition before attempting it on skates.
- Mental rehearsal
- Sequence memorization
- Pre-performance preparation
Routine Slow Skate-Through
Perform your full routine on skates at reduced speed, focusing on hitting every element correctly rather than matching the music yet.
- Slow-speed accuracy
- Element completeness
- Foundational routine practice
Routine With Music (Rough)
Perform the routine with the actual music playing, accepting imperfect synchronization on this first attempt.
- Music integration
- Real-condition practice
- Adaptive performance
Routine Refinement Pass
Identify the weakest transition in your routine and drill just that transition 10 times in isolation.
- Targeted improvement
- Weak-point identification
- Focused refinement
Confidence Building Run
Perform the complete routine once purely for enjoyment, without judging yourself, to build positive performance association.
- Performance mindset
- Enjoyment focus
- Confidence building
Recorded Routine Review
Record a full routine attempt and review it for element completeness, music sync, and overall flow.
- Self-assessment
- Recording review
- Objective evaluation
Audience Run-Through
Perform the routine for at least one live viewer to build tolerance for performing under observation.
- Performance anxiety management
- Live audience exposure
- Confidence building
Milestone Performance Dress Rehearsal
Perform the complete routine exactly as it will be assessed, to music, in one continuous take.
- Performance readiness
- Full routine simulation
- Capstone preparation
