Crossovers
The Crossover Turn
Cross one skate over the other while leaning into a turn, allowing continuous speed through the turn rather than slowing down — the technique speed skaters use to maintain momentum around curves.
Crossover Direction Practice
Practice crossovers in both directions (crossing right-over-left and left-over-right) since most skaters have a naturally dominant direction that needs deliberate balancing.
Backward Skating
Backward Balance & Stance
Backward skating uses a different center-of-gravity feel — weight sits slightly more toward the heels than forward skating. Practice the backward ready stance while stationary before attempting to move.
The Backward Stride
Push outward from a slightly pigeon-toed stance, using small alternating pushes rather than the large diagonal pushes of forward skating, to build backward momentum gradually.
The Crossover & Backward Circuit
Skate a full circle using crossover turns in both directions, then transition to backward skating for at least 10 meters in a straight line, then return to forward skating.
Success criteria: Crossovers are executed cleanly in both directions without stumbling. The transition to backward skating happens under control. Backward skating covers the distance without falling.
Phase 3 Practice Exercises
12 exercises to build skill through direct application.
Crossover Isolation (Dominant Side)
Practice crossover steps around a wide curve in your dominant direction, 10 repetitions, focusing on clean foot-over-foot motion.
- Crossover mechanics
- Dominant-side fluency
- Foot-crossing technique
Crossover Isolation (Weak Side)
Repeat the same crossover practice in your non-dominant direction, giving this extra repetitions to balance the asymmetry.
- Weak-side development
- Balanced skill building
- Directional symmetry
Crossover Speed Maintenance
Practice crossovers while consciously trying to maintain (not lose) speed through the turn, comparing to a lean turn's speed loss.
- Speed conservation
- Advanced turning technique
- Comparative technique awareness
Backward Stance Hold
Hold the backward ready stance stationary for 30 seconds, noting the different weight distribution compared to forward stance.
- Backward balance
- Stance awareness
- Weight distribution control
Backward Stride Isolation
Practice single backward pushes against a wall or rail for support, 10 repetitions, before attempting free movement.
- Backward push mechanics
- Supported practice
- Gradual skill building
Free Backward Stride
Attempt backward striding without support for 5 meters, accepting some wobble as normal at this stage.
- Backward movement confidence
- Unsupported practice
- Progressive difficulty
Forward-to-Backward Transition
Practice transitioning from forward skating to backward skating through a controlled pivot, 5 times.
- Transition technique
- Directional pivot
- Combined skill application
Backward-to-Forward Transition

- Reverse transition
- Bidirectional fluency
- Skill combination
Full Crossover Circle
Skate a complete circle using crossovers exclusively, in your dominant direction, without stopping.
- Sustained crossover application
