Reading Tablature
How Tab Notation Works
Guitar tablature shows 6 horizontal lines representing the 6 strings (top line = high E), with numbers indicating which fret to press. Unlike standard notation, tab shows exactly where to put your fingers but not rhythm — you must listen to a recording alongside it.
Tab Symbols: Bends, Slides & Hammer-Ons
A curved line between two numbers means a slide; 'h' means hammer-on (fret a note without picking again); 'b' means bend the string to raise pitch. Learning these symbols unlocks reading real transcribed songs and solos.
Fingerpicking
The P-I-M-A Pattern
Classical fingerpicking assigns thumb (P) to bass strings, index (I), middle (M), and ring (A) fingers to treble strings. Practice a simple P-I-M-A arpeggio pattern over a single chord until it flows smoothly.
Travis Picking Basics
A folk and country fingerpicking style alternating the thumb between bass notes while the fingers pick a syncopated melody on top — the foundation of countless singer-songwriter accompaniment styles.
Barre Chords
The F Major Barre Shape
Barre chords use one finger flattened across all 6 strings to act as a movable 'nut,' allowing any major or minor chord shape to be transposed anywhere on the neck. F major is the classic first barre chord and the hardest for most beginners.
Barre Chord Hand Strength
Barre chords require significantly more finger strength and precise angle than open chords. Practice isolated barre-finger pressing exercises daily — this is a strength-building process that takes weeks, not days.
The Fingerstyle & Barre Showcase
Play a fingerpicked arrangement of a simple song using the P-I-M-A pattern, then play the same song's chords using barre chord shapes instead of open chords.
Success criteria: The fingerpicking pattern stays even and rhythmic throughout. At least 2 barre chords ring cleanly with no buzzing across all 6 strings.
Phase 3 Practice Exercises

Tab Sight-Reading Drill
Read and play 5 short tab excerpts (4 notes each) cold, without prior practice, checking accuracy against a reference recording.
- Tab literacy
- Cold reading
- Accuracy verification
Symbol Recognition Test
Identify hammer-on, slide, and bend symbols in 10 tab excerpts without playing, just reading and naming each symbol.
- Symbol fluency
- Notation literacy
- Recognition speed
PIMA Isolated Practice
Play the P-I-M-A pattern over a single C chord for 5 minutes, focusing on even volume across all 4 fingers.
- Finger independence
- Even dynamics
- Pattern automation
Thumb-Only Bass Pattern
Isolate the alternating thumb bass pattern from Travis picking, playing it alone for 3 minutes without the melody fingers.
