Basic Fills
The One-Bar Snare Fill
A fill breaks the groove briefly to signal a section change. The simplest fill replaces the last bar of a groove with a rapid snare pattern leading back into the downbeat.
Tom Fills Across the Kit
Move a fill pattern across snare and toms in descending pitch order (high tom to low tom to snare/kick) — the classic 'tom roll' sound heard in countless rock and pop songs.
Dynamics
Playing Quiet vs. Loud
Practice playing the exact same groove at 3 distinct volume levels — quiet verse dynamics, medium, and loud chorus dynamics — using stick height and wrist snap to control volume, not tension.
Accents Within a Pattern
An accent emphasizes one note within an otherwise even pattern by hitting it noticeably harder. Practice playing steady eighth notes with an accent on every 3rd note to build independent accent control.
Syncopation
Off-Beat Kick Patterns
Moving the kick drum off the strict 1-and-3 pattern onto off-beats creates syncopated, funk-influenced grooves. Practice a kick pattern that lands on the 'and' of beat 2.
Ghost Notes on Snare
A ghost note is an extremely quiet snare hit played between the main backbeat accents, adding rhythmic texture without overpowering the groove — a hallmark of funk and R&B drumming.
The Fill-and-Dynamics Groove
Play a basic rock groove for 4 bars at medium volume, insert a one-bar tom fill, then continue the groove at increased (chorus) volume for 4 more bars.
Success criteria: The fill lands cleanly back on the downbeat with no rushing. The volume increase after the fill is clearly audible and deliberate, not accidental.
Phase 3 Practice Exercises
12 exercises to build skill through direct application.
Snare Fill Isolation
Practice the one-bar snare fill alone, disconnected from any groove, 10 times until the sticking feels automatic.
- Fill pattern memorization
- Isolated technique
- Sticking automation
Fill-Into-Downbeat Timing
Play the groove, insert the fill, and check specifically that the note after the fill lands exactly on beat 1.
- Timing precision
- Fill-to-groove transition
- Downbeat accuracy
Tom Roll Pitch Order
Practice moving a fill pattern from high tom to mid tom to floor tom in strict descending pitch order.
- Tom fill technique
- Pitch-order fills
- Kit-wide coordination
3-Volume Groove Drill
Play the same 4-bar groove 3 times: once quiet, once medium, once loud, checking the volume difference is clearly audible.
- Dynamic range
- Volume control technique
- Consistent groove at varying volumes
Accent Isolation Drill
Play steady eighth notes accenting only every 3rd note, first ghosting the others silently, then adding them back quietly.
- Accent control
- Pattern subdivision
- Independent stick height control
Syncopated Kick Isolation
Practice the off-beat kick pattern alone (no hands) until the 'and of 2' placement feels completely natural.
- Syncopation isolation
- Kick timing precision
- Off-beat feel
Ghost Note Volume Control
Practice playing ghost notes at a noticeably quieter volume than backbeat accents, checking the contrast is clear.
- Ghost note technique
- Dynamic contrast
- Subtle texture control
Full Syncopated Groove Build
Combine the syncopated kick and ghost notes into a full groove, starting very slowly and building tempo gradually.
- Full syncopation combination
- Slow practice method
- Advanced coordination
Fill Variation Exploration
Create 2 different one-bar fills using different sticking patterns and compare which fits the milestone groove better.
- Creative fill variation
- Pattern comparison
- Musical judgment
Dynamics Within a Fill
Practice a fill that itself crescendos from quiet to loud across its bar, adding expressive shape to the transition.
- Dynamic shaping
- Expressive fill technique
- Advanced musicality
