Phase 1 · Weeks 1–4

The Timeline & Basic Cuts

Phase Objective: Navigate the editing interface, import and organize footage, and make your first clean cuts.
Beginner 3 Modules · 1 Milestone
MODULE 01

The Editing Interface

1.1

Timeline, Preview & Project Panel

Every editor (Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut) shares the same three core areas: a project panel for imported footage, a preview window, and a timeline where clips are arranged in sequence. Learn to navigate all three fluently before editing anything.

1.2

Importing & Organizing Footage

Create bins or folders for footage, audio, and graphics before importing anything. A disorganized project with hundreds of unlabeled clips is the single biggest productivity killer for beginning editors.

MODULE 02

Basic Cuts

2.1

The Cut, Trim & Ripple Delete

A cut splits a clip at the playhead; a trim adjusts a clip's start or end point by dragging its edge; ripple delete removes a section and automatically closes the resulting gap. These three actions are the entire foundation of editing.

2.2

J-Cuts and L-Cuts

A J-cut lets audio from the next clip begin before its video appears; an L-cut lets audio from the current clip continue after its video ends — both create smoother, more natural-feeling transitions between shots than a hard simultaneous cut.

Pro Tip Listen to any professionally edited dialogue scene — you'll almost never hear a hard audio cut exactly on the video cut. J and L cuts are everywhere once you know to listen for them.

MODULE 03

Basic Sequence Building

3.1

The Rough Cut

Assemble all your selected clips in rough order first, without worrying about precise trimming or polish — getting the full sequence's shape established before refining any individual cut prevents over-polishing scenes that get cut entirely later.

3.2

Reviewing & Re-Ordering

Watch your rough cut all the way through without stopping to fix things, taking notes instead — then make structural changes (reordering, removing sections) before diving into fine detail work.

🏆 Phase 1 Milestone

The 60-Second Rough Cut

Given 5 minutes of raw provided footage, organize it into labeled bins, then assemble a clean 60-second rough cut using at least 8 distinct cuts, with no black gaps or accidental duplicate frames.

Success criteria: The footage is organized into at least 2 labeled bins before editing begins. The final sequence runs approximately 60 seconds with no timeline gaps. At least 8 cuts are used, each a clean edit point without stray frames.

  • J-cut technique
  • Audio-video offset
  • Smooth transition creation
Exercise 07 of 12 · Beginner

L-Cut Construction

Construct 3 L-cuts in the same scene, letting audio continue after its video cuts away.

  • L-cut technique
  • Audio-video offset
  • Natural transition creation

Rough Cut Assembly (Timed)

Assemble a rough cut from 10 provided clips in under 15 minutes, focusing on speed and overall shape over precision.

  • Rapid assembly skill
  • Time-boxed editing
  • Structural prioritization
