Light Source & Core Shadow
Establish a single, consistent light source direction for a piece before shading anything — every shadow and highlight must logically agree with where that light comes from, or the form reads as flat or confusing.
The Five Values of Form
Highlight, light, halftone (mid-tone), core shadow, and reflected light are the five value zones that, applied correctly, make a flat colored shape read as a solid 3D form.
Digital Shading Techniques
Soft Shading with Airbrush
Use a low-opacity airbrush brush on a Multiply-blend layer above your flat colors to build up soft, gradual shadow transitions — ideal for skin, fabric, and organic soft-light rendering.
Hard Cel Shading
Use a hard-edged brush to apply flat-shaped shadow shapes with sharp boundaries rather than soft gradients — the stylized 'cel-shaded' look common in modern illustration and animation styles.
Rendering Materials
Rendering Skin vs. Metal vs. Fabric
Skin has soft, spread-out highlights and warm reflected light; metal has small, sharp, high-contrast highlights; fabric has soft shadows that follow the folds. Each material demands a distinct shading approach.
Adding Rim Light & Glow
A thin highlight along the edge of a form, opposite the main light source, separates a subject visually from its background and adds dramatic polish — achieved on a Screen or Add blend mode layer.
The Fully Rendered Illustration
Take your Phase 2 colored character illustration and add complete digital shading: a clear consistent light source, all five value zones represented, and at least one material-specific rendering technique (skin, metal, or fabric).
Success criteria: The shading logically follows a single consistent light source throughout. At least 4 of the 5 value zones (highlight, light, halftone, core shadow, reflected light) are visibly present. Material rendering choices match the subject matter.
